The 2014 North Riverdale Merchant Association Holiday Gathering was held at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Including among the numerous distinguished guests were State Senator Jeff Klein, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and Councilmember Andrew Cohen.
CMSV has become a member of the association and we shared our interest in becoming a partner with the community. Kevin DeGroat, VP for Operations, welcomed everyone attending the 2014 NRMA Holidays and provided a little history about CMSV.
CMSV was founded as the Academy of Mount Saint Vincent by the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1847. In the previous decades, colleges and universities were not necessarily open to women, however, the Academy offered higher education for women, and its graduates, including many Sisters of Charity, many of whom went on to careers filled with extraordinary achievement and service. As educational opportunities expanded for women, the Academy continued to evolve and, in 1910, began to serve as a four-year liberal arts college. In 1911, the Regents of the University of the State of New York amended the charter of the Academy of Mount Saint Vincent, changing its corporate name to the College of Mount Saint Vincent and permitting it to confer baccalaureate degrees. CMSV was the first women’s college in New York City. Its programs became coeducational in 1974.
Mr. DeGroat then introduced the other CMSV staff members in attendance, providing information on their roles:
