The Friends of the Hudson River Greenway in the Bronx is a nonprofit community organization dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the natural, historic and cultural features of the Hudson River in the Bronx and Westchester and the enhancement of the recreational and educational opportunities provided by the River. We work with other community, civic and environmental groups to create a greenway along the River from the northern tip of Manhattan to Yonkers and beyond. We seek to protect and preserve the Hudson River and its shores, its fish and bird and other animal life and its scenic views; and to ensure that it is clean, safe and secure. FHRG is the fiscal sponsor of Riverdale Riverfest, a massive annual event held in June at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Last year’s festival drew 5,000 people of all ages from the Northwest Bronx and surrounding areas congregated at the banks of the Hudson River. With the aid of a temporary dock, about 500 festival-goers experienced sails aboard the Sloop Clearwater, the A.J. Meerwald and the John J. Harvey fireboat. The annual festival presents the sole opportunity for local residents to sail the Hudson from their own shoreline. In addition to the boat rides and Bronx Greenway exhibit , the festival features talented local musicians; a maritime museum on wheels; a multimedia presentation on the history of the Hudson River and the Bronx; an authentic Native American shad bake; a farmer’s market and award-winning food vendors; a local group of Renaissance re-creators and much more.
